What can be done in 2 hours and 30 minutes? One can watch a movie, take a nap, or have a full course meal. 2 hours and 30 minutes is a short time, but, that did not stop us. In that amount of time, we, Wolfpack Consulting, were able to understand a business case and provide a business solution to well known companies in front of honorable judges.

Between March 11 and March 27, Pakapol Thangtongchin, Poomrata Wangpreedalertkul, Siwawong Wongsophanakul, and I, Ravisara Grover participated in the HSBC Thailand Business Case Competition 2016. The competition was held by HSBC in collaboration with BBA International Program, Thammasat Business School. The competition was divided into 4 stages: first round, qualifying round, semi-final round, and final round.

During the first round, the task was to provide a strategy for Visa to maintain its position against China UnionPay in the EPS market using powerpoint slides within one week. Out of 195 teams, 24 teams made it through. Then, it was the qualifying round. The task in this round was to present the Visa vs. CUP case to a panel of judges. 12 teams out of 24 passed through. This seems ordinary like any other case competitions, but then comes the turning point. In the first 2 rounds, we were allowed to use powerpoint slides to present, however, in the semi-final round, we were allowed to use only transparent sheet. Moreover, we had only 2 hours and 30 minutes to crack the case, propose a solution, and prepare the transparent sheet.

On the morning of the semi-final round, our team came in excited and ready to tackle the challenges presented. The case for this round was Microsoft Corporation. When we received the case, we were surprised since it was over 60 pages long. I thought to myself, “How actually are we ever going to finish this?” But over the course of 2 hours and 30 minutes, we synced together and we pushed each other allowing us to deliver our best to the judges. Despite the tough competition, we made it to the final round with 3 other teams.

Our last case in the final round of the competition was Toys “R” Us. This time, we had to provide our solution not only to an honorable panel of judges but also a large group of audience, including peers, families, and professors. Luckily for us, a large group of audience did not bring pressure. They brought excitement. When we got out on that stage, we gave it all out best. We gave everything we had to offer. “No regrets,” a professor once said.

At the end of the day, we were announced the “Champion” of HSBC Thailand Business Case Competition. However, this would have never happened if it wasn’t for our team work and determination, but most importantly, the support from our advisors, Ajarn Worapong, Ajarn Supawat, Ajarn Orapan, Ajarn Nopporn as well as the BBA Program. We truly appreciate your support.
