After months of practicing, our team had an opportunity to participate in the 22nd ICU Debate Tournament at International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo, Japan during March 16th- 18th, 2013. It is the one and only international tournament held annually in Japan, which has continuously gathered debaters from various region of Asia. The tournament was hosted by ICU tournament committees, with their passion in debating and their hard work, the competition was successfully carried on despite some logistic challenges.

In this year, there were over 50 teams from varying nations, competing in high quality debates throughout those 3 days. In the tournament, there were 6 rounds, 3 rounds for each of the first two days, and the best 16 teams with the highest score would go to the final round of the last day. Although we didn’t make it to the final round, we’ve got great experience worth sharing from this tournament.

Getting to compete with experienced debaters from many universities in motions about criminal justice, war, minorities and democracy, our team learned to improve our debating and critical thinking skills. We learned to break down national, economic, cultural and ethnic boundaries, showing that opposing views can be explored in a way that connects rather than divides people. Because the tournament emphasized on good reasoning, effective communication, independent research and teamwork, ICU tournament taught skills that serve participants well in university, in the workplace, in political life and in fulfilling our responsibilities as citizens of democratic societies.

With the opportunity and support that we’ve got to join this competition, we are better able to critically examine the pronouncements of our political representatives and to make informed judgments about crucial issues. Lastly, we enjoyed the comradeship as well as the serious competition with fellow debaters from the international debating community.
